The history of the "German Butcher" and the Barsch family began over a century ago in the small town of Oranienburg, Germany. The family had a large slaughter house and sausage manufacturing business. In 1955, they decided to move to the city of Berlin and started a full butcher shop as well.
Family members over four generations have learned the trade of making homemade products like frankfurters, lunchmeats, kielbasa, bologna, sausages & bratwursts.
Around 1978, the store moved from its original location in the now extinct Lacey Plaza to 111 Lacey Rd. The Barsch family dutifully served the community at this location for another 20 years before outgrowing the small store. In 1999, the shop moved to its current location at 109 Lacey Rd and now has 5000 square feet of retail space to serve the ever-growing community.
After many years in Germany, Irmgard, her second husband Kurt Marocke, and her children Wolfgang, Detlev & Annedore finally decided that the life of freedom they desired was not available in Germany. They set their sites on the United States. In 1969, they began their voyage over and settled in the small, friendly town of Forked River.
As German immigrants, the family knew very little English. On one particular occasion a customer departed the new store saying, "See you later!". When they looked up each word in the dictionary, they assumed the customer was coming back; they kept the store open until 11 pm but he never returned. The family had many obstacles to overcome besides their new language.
Today, the shop has an eatery, groceries, imported German & Italian goods, and well over 100 homemade products. They recieve fresh baked bread every morning from bakeries in Manhatten and Staten Island. The butchers and sausage makers continue their trade as they did in the old country. They have 2 smokehouses that are in constant production making homemade smaked hams, frankfurters and much more. The core value of the German Butcher Shop and the Barsch family is to always put quality first. We continue to innovate and make new products to excite our ever growing customer base.
